Yesterday I was out eating dinner with one of my cast members and I told her about my mini money challenge and how I wasn’t exactly nailing it – trying to live entirely off your per diem is something that a lot of folks do, so I learned she was trying to do the same thing and not really succeeding either.

We agreed that it was partially because it’s been a pretty fun tour – we stop and do lots of things. We also seem to drive through a lot of areas where fast food isn’t even an option, so you wind up eating at the only real restaurant in what Bumpkintown, America spot we’re in.

I sort of shrugged it off and said it wasn’t a huge deal, since I was meeting my savings goals anyway, when she told me she wasn’t. I said I guess I really hadn’t worried about it since it seemed like each week or so I more than made up my per diem vs. dipping into salary difference with income from my blog.

Which got us musing about what sort of side hustles you can actually do when you’re on the move 24/7. And I mean literally on the move, not just busy.

  • Blogging – you can start a blog from anywhere, says the girl who began hers living on a mobile circus train. Blogging isn’t likely to start out as a lucrative side hustle, although if you do want to do it 100% for income, there are quite a few bloggers in niche areas who manage to do just that. For me, blogging is a slow burn game. I do it because I love it and because it always forces me to push myself to learn more about personal finance… and along the way it’s slowly started making me a little money.

As a blogger, I make most of my money from sponsored content, but also the occasional affiliate sales or advertising. You could also write an ebook and sell it on your website.

  • Freelance Writing – this is closely connected to blogging, but a different way to make money. You can write for other websites (which is a great way to start) and then work your way up to larger clients, possibly even working with legitimate news sources.

This isn’t just in personal finance, think about visiting CNN.com, what subjects do they cover? Each of those subjects also has thousands of other sites and blogs, many of whom would pay for your stories.

This great post over at The Pennyhoarder will point you to several websites that pay for guest posts.

  • Virtual Assistant – virtual assistant work can be done from anywhere you can find an internet connection. As long as you can carve out enough time, you can do this work anywhere.

Check out Virtual Assistant openings here.

  • Coaching – if you have a cool, unique skills – like mad money managing abilities or knowledge of how to make puppets, you could turn those skills into videos people could pay to access or into individual coaching sessions. If you have a phone or Skype, you have a way to contact folks.

Anyone else got any ideas for travel friendly side hustles?

  1. I love being able to blog on the road. I am going on a volunteer trip abroad and I plan on blogging my adventures as much as possible. I also like that my blog is basically a diary for me and I’m able to share it with others as well.
