Get in the Zone

Get in the Zone

You know those moments when you’re in the zone? You can knock out tons of work and it seems like your mind is on fire. You can achieve anything!

I don’t know about you, but my perfect zone is right after I wake up on a day when I don’t have anything pressing to do. I slept as long as I wanted, got up, made a cup of coffee, and then went right to work.

The amount I can achieve in this zone is ridiculous!

Until I break the zone. The first time I stray over to Facebook or think, I’m just going to watch one episode of Northern Exposure while I eat this sandwich…. Done. The magic is gone.

Once I start wondering about that... I'm done.

Once I start wondering about that… I’m done.

The main reason this is on my mind is because I am so not in the zone right now. I’ve been at work for 17 hours. I’m killing time for another two hours waiting for a load out to end that I have to babysit.

My mind actually feels like mush. I feel like I’m trying to write this post through a total mind fog. Candy Crush is too mentally taxing for me right now.

If I’d paid any attention to my own advice a few weeks ago and prepared in advance, I’d be 110% ahead of the game. Instead, as I sat down to lunch and realized I hadn’t written anything yet for today, I panicked.

And spent the next 10 hours thinking about what a dope I was. My schedule is pretty varied at work, so whenever I’ve got the evening shift, I knock out several blog posts while I’m in the zone.  That just didn’t happen this week.

Probably because part of knowing your zone includes not overcrowding it. My hours at my regular job are crazy this week. It’s crunch time throwing together props for another job this week (speaking of, New Yorkers, want to see something weird? Come check out If the Saints Arrive in Germany). Also, one of my best friend’s is turning 30 this weekend and I’m headed off to visit her in Maryland on a weekend when there’s really a ton of other stuff I should be doing.

Zone fail. FAIL.

When do you get in the zone?

  1. I TOTALLY have this happen to my all the time, in fact I was just complaining to my hubby last night about it. I have realized that when I get in the zone, now, I just can’t leave it. When I am there, I get a sh&t-ton of work done and I feel awesome, but if I break for lunch or to work out or something else, the zone just disappears and I don’t always know when it will reappear.

    • Ugh. I know. I appreciate that I at least know when the optimum time is for me, but I’m irritated it takes kind of a rare set up – plenty of sleep and then nothing to do for several hours after I wake up. If only work was always 2-10 or 4-12, I’d be a super productive girl.
