No one likes paying bills, but sadly they’re a part of life in modern society. Unless you’re planning on moving off-grid, growing your own food and creating your own energy then you’re never going to eradicate your bills altogether. But what if you could reduce the cost of your bills and do a little something for the environment at the same time? Although it seems like a Door-To-Door Sales Training For Solar sentence, think about it.
That sounds like a win-win situation.
Tighten all your taps
If you’re on a water metre then every drop of water you use is costing you money and harming the environment and so you really need to fix that leaky faucet. Did you know that a dripping tap, dripping at a rate of 10 drops per minute is wasting 3 litres of water per day! Leaking faucets and showerheads soon add up and simply tightening them up will reduce your water bill as well as reducing the amount of water you waste.
Turn off all devices you leave on standby
Believe it or not, plugged in devices that are left on standby are still using power and costing you money. Although this may seem like a relatively small expense per hour it soon racks up and can add a significant amount of money to your annual bill. Get into the habit of turning off all plug sockets at the wall and don’t leave any devices on standby when you are not using them. Using a smart-meter or energy app on your phone is a great way to monitor your energy usage and see in real time what you’re spending.
Invest renewable energy
From wind turbines to solar panels there are now a number of renewable energy sources that can be installed at your home. Companies such as https://www.easysolar.com.au/ are making it easier than ever to utilise the power of solar energy and although they may need a little initial investment they will pay themselves back and inevitably save you money. Alongside becoming one of the cheapest energy sources renewable energy is also the best option for the environment by reducing the consumption of harmful fossil fuels. So if you’re in the position to do so an investment in renewable energy is the way forward.
Eat seasonally
With exotic food now readily available all year round we have forgotten how to eat with the seasons. Seasonal eating is in fact often the cheapest way to eat as the product price does not have to incorporate the travel costs of the food. As well as being a cheaper way to eat seasonal eating is also the best way to eat for the environment. Out of season food usually has to travel from other countries and to ensure it is at its freshest when it reaches us this means often travelling my plane, this therefore gives out of season food a very high carbon footprint.
Never underestimate the impact that making a few small changes to your home and lifestyle can have on your finances and environmental impact. It is often the smallest things that can amount to the biggest changes.
Although it might not save anything, signing up with Arcadia Power allows you to immediately have half your energy bill come from renewable resources – and you can pay a little more to get that to 100 percent.
Updating old appliances is a good way to reduce that energy bill as well. And unplug just about everything you’re not using. (There are exceptions – the dryer doesn’t use any power when not in use, so best to leave it plugged in.) I used 242 kWh last billing cycle. My lowest yet!

Sustainability is the key actually. We should always start with our self, as for me I’ve considered switching to solar panels to power up my home.
Good for you! Solar panels can be a great investment over time and definitely a good step forward for the environment.
Hi Mel,
I use smart power bars that shut off electricity to all of my appliances at night or when Im away, saves me about $15 a month.

Solar panel systems are a great way for you to save money, no matter your budget. If you can afford to pay the electricity bill every month, you can afford to install them 🙂

Thanks for opening my eyes!
By the way, using smart home autonation is also a great idea in terms of saving money. E.g., you can set your smart thermostat to a frugal temperature while you’re away and program it to be at your preferred temperature by the time you return.
