You are the one who has to work your job. You are the one who has to put in the effort, and the hours, so why do other people feel the need to have a say in what you are doing? Do your parents make you feel bad about your job? Perhaps the other people around you always make comments either about how hard you work, or maybe about the fact that you had more potential than what you ended up doing. At the end of the day, it really is none of their business, because your career is about you and nobody else. Keep reading down below if you would like to find out more about this topic.
Is It What You Dreamed Of?
One of the things that you need to ask yourself is whether or not your career is what you dreamed of. Sometimes, when we are little we think that we want to do things, but as we grow older we realize that we either have no actual interest in that, or it’s not exactly what we thought it was. Happens all the time and to the best of us, so sometimes following your dreams will leave you feeling empty. However, we’re also sure that when you got a bit older you started to realize that you had a new dream, and that is the one that you should have been chasing.
So, is the carer that you’re in the thing that you dreamed of, or at least close to it? If not, then we encourage you to change your focus and actively pursue this line of work if your current job isn’t making you as happy as possible. But, if it is the dream job that you always wanted, then don’t worry what anyone else has to say. This is about you, and not what other people think is best for you.
Do You Reach Your Goals?
When you are working this job, do you reach the goals that you set for yourself? For example, if you decided a while ago that you wanted a career in which you could help other people, have you achieved this? Do you help people on a daily basis? Reaching your own personal goals through your career is important. The reason for this is because you decided on these goals for a reason, and if you don’t work on achieving them then you might feel as though you have failed in some way.
We don’t want you to go through life feeling as though you are failing and not able to reach the goals that you set for yourself. It’s not a nice feeling to experience, so you need to make sure that your career is rewarding you in this way. If it’s not currently but you know it has the potential to, the answer is to work that little bit harder.
Are You Happy?
Do you get up in the morning and look forward to going to work? Do you get excited by all the possibilities that are waiting for you today, even if sometimes work is stressful? This is the kind of feeling that you should have when it comes to your job, and if you have any other kind of feeling on a regular basis, this is a sure sign that you’re not in the right career. It’s true to say that there are always days in which we feel as though we can’t be bothered, and that we don’t want to, this is perfectly normal. The difference is that this happens once every now and then, not on a daily basis when it comes to going to work.
You need to be happy in the job that you choose, and if you are, then this is all that matters ultimately. Don’t let other people tell you that you should be doing something else if you have already found the thing that makes you want to get up in the morning and go to work.
Is It A Stable Career?
Some people love the thrill of never knowing what is going to happen in life, and other people like to be stable in the career that they have chosen. This is why some people like to work freelance as they never know what is going to be coming their way, while other people prefer to be employed full time by a business. It depends on the other commitments that you have in your life, and a number of other factors as to which of this is going to better suit you. For example, some people might want to look into travel nursing jobs rather than working in one hospital all the time, where others would rather have the stability and familiarity of the latter.
There are some industries in which work is a lot more likely than others. Some industries fluctuate so much that you could have a job one second, and in the blink of an eye it’s gone, only to see companies recruiting a week or month later. If stability is something that you need, make sure you have it.
More Than One Job
If you are someone who works more than one job, you need to make sure that this works with the goals that you have set for yourself. If your goal is to be the best that you possibly can be as fast as you can, while also learning as much as you can, we encourage you to slow down a little. However, if this is what you want to do, and you are working more than one job, it’s nobody’s business but your own. Just make sure that you are not letting yourself get to a point where you are burning out before you make it to the top.
Achieving Whatever You Want
Finally, you need to make sure that your career is about achieving what you want. We all have goals in life, we all have things that we want to accomplish. You should base your career around these goals instead of just choosing a boring or mundane position. Don’t forget, you’re going to spend about thirty percent of your life working. If you take into account sleep and traffic this means that you’ll spend more time at work then you do with your family or friends. Indeed, you’ll spend more time on your career than virtually any other personal aspect of your life. That’s why it’s so important that it is fulfilling and that you do achieve things that you hoped for.
A great way to approach this is by setting SMART goals. SMART goals are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timely. If you set goals like this, then you can make sure that you are always moving forward in your career, taking things further each year.
Do note that to move forward in your career, you need to have the right level of confidence. You need to be sure of what you can bring to the table and what you are able to offer to the companies that you are going to be working for.
We hope that you have found this article helpful, and now see some of the things that you are going to need to consider when it comes to your career. At the end of the day, you need to understand that your career is about you and nobody else, unless it’s your family. Even then though, you deserve to be in a career that you love, so make sure this is what you are doing. We wish you the very best of luck, and hope that you now see that all choices pertaining to your career are yours to make, not anyone else’s. Good luck.

Very nice post with much wisdom. I had a great career, not because of the money I made or the number of people who ended up working for me but because I achieved my SMART goals and had so much fun doing it. As you point out it isn’t a one size fits all world, so you need to know yourself. I was lucky to have developed a lot of self knowledge early in life, sometimes people don’t get there as quickly. It is possible to get up in the morning looking forward to the work day. But its far too rare. I hope this inspires your readers not to settle or try to fit into a space that just isn’t them.

Thanks! I’m glad you had a great career. So much of life seems to go better when we look inward and challenge ourselves rather than comparing to others. 🙂
