I think I am somewhat of a minimalist – it comes with living in boats, trains, and hotels. Moving into an RV was pretty easy after that. It’s even taken me most of a year to really decorate and feel moved in.
I’m easily affected by clutter.
I just had a crazy week at work and felt like I was literally coming unhinged every time I opened any of my email accounts. It just seemed like there were piles of junk obscuring the stuff I actually needed.
When my desk is a mess, I feel like I can’t get anything done.
Whenever I have to pack for a long trip, I have to clean my entire room first and make my bed before I can start to tackle the task of packing.
Ordered lives are so useful. A lot of my stuff is still stored at my parents (so… maybe not a total minimalist – more of a somewhat minimalist with a giant storage unit I call my parents house). If I leave my old bedroom cluttered when I leave for months at a time, if I need something from it, I can’t explain to anyone at home what I need – whether it’s a copy of my car insurance to a forgotten favorite sweater. When things are organized, it’s easy to get someone else to jump in and help.
I’ve noticed that during hectic times in my life, the clutter gets worse. It’s the first step towards feeling overwhelmed for me.
So. Fight the clutter. Embrace the orderliness. It’s easier to achieve more in an ordered life.
