Money Things I Wish I Understood Better

Here are some money things that still puzzle me.

Mortgages

Man, I thought buying a house wouldn’t be so complicated. How naïve, was I? Mortgages are wildly confusing. Not only how to find a lender but what you need to qualify for one, what the different types mean, etc., etc.

I mean. Ugh. What the heck.

One of my older cousins advice about buying a home for the first time was just to do it because it will never really make any sense.

So… there’s that I guess.

Long Term Care Insurance

I worry about this more for my dad than for me right now, but it does seem like another fairly confusing money thing. I’ve read some blog articles about them and it always seems like a bit of a trap – with fine print things catching a lot of people up when they need to actually use.

Health Insurance

How basic is this? But I’m still super confused about absolutely everything related to our healthcare system. I feel very sure that I’m only one major health scare from poverty, even though I have insurance and decent savings. I don’t understand how the subsidies work. I don’t understand how to pick a good insurance company that is actually affordable. I feel like this is 100% an area in life I just roll the die and hope for the best.

Stock Fees

I’ve read a lot of posts about the different fees associated with mutual funds, stocks, any kind of managed account and I’m always still a little confused. Like, I get that you want a low fee, but what exactly is a low fee? And how does one find these things?

Bitcoin

Let’s just leave this at still wildly confused. How can something without any actual value have value just cause we say it has value? I mean… I understand that’s sort of cash in a nutshell, but what is backing bitcoin? Nothing really.

What about personal finance puzzles you?

  1. Getting done the mortgage is the harder part to get through… I am exploring bitcoin generally the blockchain thing… there are some really good things going on there.. in terms of short term investment its not the right place.. at least as far as I know!
