Hi there friends! Today I want to present you with something entirely different, the next YouTube sensation – Inside the Artists Wallet.
Ok, so maybe not a general sensation, but if you’ve ever wondered how people who work in the arts actually manage to get by and not starve to death, this is the series for you! I’ve teamed up with Stefanie from The Broke and Beautiful Life to interview our friends, coworkers and former classmates on how they’re managing to make life work in the arts.
Bear with us while we work out the kinks, we’re definitely new to the whole world of video blogging, but today we’re ready to release the first episode of our series.
Our first victim is Patrick Judd, a fellow Stockton alumni, who has made it to NYC and has his own theater company XYXee. If you’re a New Yorker (or nearby), you can check out their work on December 6th when they present 1959 Pink Thunderbird Convertible, tickets are only $18 and you can get them here.
Our first episode with him covers his education, how he manages his student loans and the pros and cons of studying theater in a school with a relatively unknown theater program.
Today we’re discussing…
0:52- 2:15: The pros and cons of attending a small school vs. enrolling in a bigger “brand name” university program. i.e. NYU (Stefanie) vs. Stockton (Mel and Patrick).
2:16-3:02: Student loans… for a performance major (more on that at 7:45).
3:03-4:43: What to do post-grad? Figuring it out- where to go, what to do, and creating your own opportunities.
4:44-5:55: Surviving day-to-day. Survival jobs!
5:56-7:44: Moving to New York City. New goals and new survival jobs.
7:45-8:09: Paying back those student loans.
8:10-9:05: Budgeting for career expenses and finding alternative methods.
9:06-11:49: What students should know about their finances NOW.
11:50- 14:50: The “biz”: should I stay or should I go? Self-imposed deadlines and alternatives.
Check back soon or subscribe us on YouTube for the latest episodes, up next we’ll talk about how Patrick started his own theater company and the financial aspects of being an entrepreneur in the arts!

This is great. My nephew is a starving artist and I think this would be a great video for him to watch. Keep them coming.

Just watched the video, great first guest. He spoke her confidently it was entertaining. Just a couple of things, I think you are going after the Inside the Actors Studio deal so I would suggest setting up a better seating arrangement. You had your back to the guest and it was a little awkward. Maybe try the round table or make it your own like Galifinakis in Between Two Ferns. There was background noise which I found a little distracting, like the email notifications. Lastly, wouldn’t it be Inside the Artist’s Wallet? Will definitely keep watching the videos.
