Know Yourself
Before you can choose the career that is the right fit for you, you need to learn about yourself. Understanding yourself can instantly run some careers in and others out immediately. Consider what do you enjoy, what are your values, your ethics, what skills do you have, as well as understanding your personality traits.
Certain careers such within sales, whether that is selling a carrier furnace gas valve or a car, will require you to be confident dealing with customers. If you struggle in social circumstances then this type of job might not be suited to you. This is why identifying your strengths and weaknesses is so important.
Create A Shortlist
Once you have assessed your attribute you can use only assessments to be guided towards certain careers that will be a good fit for you.
From there you can go and explore these job roles in more detail and see which ones appeal to you. It is important that you are interested in the role as you will be spending a large chunk of the working week carrying out the job in the future.
As you are going through these, the ones that sound favorable, put on a shortlist. Then go through this and make sure that you meet the requirements to enable you to apply.
Network With People In These Roles
A job description only provides so much information. Reach out to the company or network with people in those roles and take the opportunity to ask questions and learn about it.
You want to apply and land a job that you will enjoy and be able to build a career within. Investing time understanding the role to its fullest will enable you to really decide if this is a career that you would want to be part of.
Understand The Future Opportunities
When you are starting out on the career ladder it is unlikely that the first job you enter into is the only one you will have. A lot of people have ambitions to be able to climb the ladder and develop. This initial job may be a stepping stone to allow you to develop skills and knowledge to ultimately reach your dream job.
Knowing about the progression path and what doors it opens can be a significant part of making decisions.
When looking at deciding on a career, think about your career goal. What is the job that you have your eyes set upon and create a career plan as to how you will navigate through your career path to get you there.
