How To Make Sure Your Career Doesn’t Kill You

Do you consider yourself to be a ‘career person?’ If so, you probably spend a lot of your time at work, thinking about work when you’re not there, and doing all you can to make sure your job is being done to the best of your ability. However, people who are wrapped up in their career can sometimes lose touch with themselves and what it means to relax. They can end up burning out, or even having a breakdown. Here’s how to make sure your career doesn’t kill you:

Use Your Time Off Wisely

Everybody is entitled to time off, so make sure you take yours and use it wisely. Some people like to have one or two days off here and there to make up long weekends, while others like to save up all of theirs and have a relaxing few weeks off at a time. Whatever you do, make sure you use this time wisely by getting back in touch with yourself and relaxing as much as possible.

Don’t Take Work Home With You

Refusing to take work home with you can take some skill, especially if you have a job where it’s easy to get emotionally involved. However, you need to try to keep work and home separate, or your job will begin affecting your family life, too. Make sure you use your time at home to relax, do enjoyable things with your family, get ready emotionally/physically for the next day at work.

Get Appropriate Insurance For Peace Of Mind

Insurance can help give you peace of mind depending on the job you do. For example, you could look at Insurestat if you’re a medical professional looking for insurance. Although you can’t necessarily stop anything from happening, you can be safe in the knowledge that if it does, you will be protected.

Try To Keep Up A Healthy Diet

The food you eat can make a big difference to how you feel. Do your best to keep up a healthy diet. It’s easier to do this if you prepare and freeze healthy meals at home, before taking them to work with you. Make sure you’re eating enough, too, or it’ll be difficult to resist treats you may come across while on the job or when you get home late at night.

Have Coping Mechanisms For Stressful Times

Some people like to take deep breaths, or have a quick meditation session when they are feeling stressed. Some people like to take their stress out on the gym. Others have a squeezy ball that they can really work on. Make sure you have coping mechanisms for stressful times!

Don’t Spend Any Spare Time On A Screen

Although you will be tired from your job, don’t spend all of your spare time on a screen. Scrolling aimlessly won’t get you anywhere. Try to spend the rest of your time in the real world.

Get The Right Amount Of Sleep

Prioritize your sleep. Make sure you have a set bedtime and stick to it so you can wake up feeling refreshed.

  1. Very strong advices!

I could not agree more with “Don’t take work home” and “Get enough sleep”. However, “Don’t spend any time on screen” is not something I’ll be able to do. I spend all day at work in front of a screen and most of my spare time in front of a screen (almost never a phone). Probably at least 12 hours a day in front of a computer.

  2. I’ve never understood people who don’t take advantage of paid vacation days. I use all of mine up every year! Even if I don’t have a trip in the budget I’ll take a few long weekends throughout the Summer and just stay home and get things done on my ever-growing to-do list. It might not be the most exciting way to spend vacation days but it does wonders for my mental health to step away and focus on other things.
