Gobble: Worth the Splurge?

Gobble: Worth the Splurge? | brokeGIRLrich

Well.

TL;DR is no, it’s not worth the splurge.

A key reason it’s not is that Gobble defaults to 3 meals a week instead of 2 and it turns out 3 is just way too many.

Now, you can go in and drop the meals down to 2, but you have to remember to do that. And I only remembered to do it once.

So we ate a lot of meals.

If you like doing a lot of meals a week, this might not be an issue for you. But for one or two people, it felt a bit overwhelming.

There was also a lot less cooking involved, which could be a pro or a con to you. All meals were supposed to be able to be made in less than 15 minutes, which did seem about right. However several of things arrived precut or with sauces already mixed.

I think at the very beginning of my cooking journey, this would’ve been a pro, but after the last few months, I actually kind of wanted to cook the meals.

Also the produce goes bad quicker when it’s already cut up.

Gobble has an introductory offer of the first six meals for $6 each, which makes the discount sort of hard to sort out.

Also, that number is not what actually happened, right, because the first order I did drop down to 2 dinners or 4 meals, so logically it would’ve been $24 plus shipping, not $48.93 unless their shipping is astronomical – which is hard to track though because they do not send you itemized receipts, like the other companies all did.

Instead there were random discounts because as you  can see, I paid different amounts each week for no apparent reason.

  • $46.94 (2 meals)
  • $53.93 (3 meals)
  • $48.93 (3 meals)
  • $62.95 (3 meals)

CapitalOne Shopping rebates had a $10.00 reward for shopping on Gobble.

So in total, I spent $212.75 on this meal kit company over 4 weeks and 11 meals. This comes out to $19.34 a meal or $9.67 a serving, including the shipping.

For this meal kit, we ate:

  • Cubano Pork Tenderloin with Black Bean Rice & Zucchini
  • Steak Vierge with Sauteed Zucchini & Squash
  • Pan-Roasted chicken Fricassee with Leeks & Mushrooms
  • Chicken Korma with Cashews & Coconut Rice
  • Sumac & Za’atar Seasoned Barramundi with Mediterranean Vegetables, Parsley & Pine Nuts
  • Japanese Miso Udon with Chicken, Mushrooms & Soft Poached Egg
  • Pan-Seared Chicken Breast with Green Harissa-Roasted Fennel & Carrots
  • Peruvian-Style Steak with Patatas Bravas, Vegetables & Red Chili Pepper
  • Chinese Chicken Lettuce Cups with Brown Rice
  • Salmon with Sun-Dried Tomato Cream Sauce & Pearl Couscous
  • Gemelli Pasta Arrabbiata with Asparagus Caprese Salad

There was a decent variety of options to pick from week, but there were several weeks I struggled to find enough recipes I actually liked.

They also don’t tell you much about the nutritional information. Even when you receive the recipe card, sometimes it only has the calories listed, nothing else. I find this extra weird because sometimes it has more nutritional info and sometimes it has less. There is no consistency.

I don’t love this, as someone who has been trying to each healthier. That salmon with sun-dried tomato cream sauce & pearl couscous, while it did taste pretty good, was around 1100 calories a serving and I just wouldn’t have picked it had I known that when I was selecting the meals.

They don’t ask you to provide much from your own kitchen, which is a perk.

Overall, the meals generally tasted like any warm to-go meal you might get from a supermarket. Nothing really special.

I thought the gemelli pasta arrabbiata might have been the worst meal we’ve had in 6 months of doing this.

I will say the steak vierge, Japanese miso udon, and the patatas brava were all pretty good. I did especially enjoy the miso udon.

Also all boxes arrived on time and still cold.

Overall though, I was largely unimpressed and did not find it to be worth the splurge.

Cancelling was a little complicated. I had to Google how to cancel and then clicking through the first link I found on Google. I tried to find the instructions on how to cancel or deactivate through the Gobble site, but couldn’t.

You can do it here – Gobble: How to Deactivate Account

I also don’t love that they call it deactiving and not cancelling. That can feel a little unclear.

As a whole, I’d say save your money and go with another meal kit.
