Explore Honolulu on a Budget

Ever since the Saved by the Bell kids went to Hawaii, it’s been one of my bucket list destinations. Check out these tips from my pal Fiona on how to get there without completely destroying your bank account – and check out Hipmunk for your next trip too. Personally, I love how their flight search engine can sort by “agony” – which is a combination of price, how long the flight is and number of stops. Considering how far it is from New Jersey to Honolulu, the agony factor is definitely something I’d want to consider!

  1. I have been to Honolulu once back when I was just 21. My wife and I are going back May 2016 and looking forward to it. Funny, back when we went at age 21 we left with our flights and rooms prepaid and only had $350 in our pocket and a credit card with a $600 credit limit for an emergency and never used it. We did everything free and thrifty possible just so we could eat but had the time of our lives. This time I could go with a lot a money but will try again to do things smart-frugal and hopefully still have the time of our lives. I will be taking more than $350 this time. The first trip was in 1979 and even back then that was not enough money to eat 2 or 3 meals a day on for a week if you didn’t get off-tourist and find where some of the locals go. We sat through timeshare presentations to get free rental cars and some other things. We learned that the public humiliation they laid on us for not buying was short as we were hustled out of the room but the fun we had with their free offered stuff was priceless.
