So, after an approximately 4 year run, my old glasses from GlassesShop.com finally bit the dust. I have to say, they held up pretty well. I had gotten them for free in return for a review, but if I had to buy them myself, they would’ve cost $32.90.
They weren’t the most comfortable after a long day, so I think if I were a 100% of the time glasses wearer, I might have wanted to spring for a more comfortable pair. Since I pretty much just wear them at night and on the rare day here and there, they were fine.
What really did them in was that I dropped them on the bathroom floor apparently one too many times (because they did withstand quite a few drops) and cracked the frame. This happened out on tour in January and our excellent prop master managed to put some kind of bonding agent on them to keep the frame holding together for the last few weeks of tour, but I definitely looked like a goober.
I decided since I had a little more cash flow in February, to splurge for another Coastal pair. In 2013 I bought my first online pair of glasses while on tour with them and I really liked them. They lasted three years until I dropped my computer on my face while wearing them and scratched one of the lenses pretty good.
They were definitely more comfortable than the GlassesShop pair, but they also cost $80, so one would hope for the extra $40 of comfort, right?
My first pair from Coastal were those cute cat eye glasses above, this time I went with a rounder, larger look, these Jessica Simpson Tortoise Pink frames. The frames were $35 and my lenses (which are a really high prescription – so they cost more everywhere) were $56, bringing the total for this pair to $91.
We are getting awfully close to just going to Lenscrafters anyway price range.
They had quick shipping.
And I have to say… I hate them.
Like, I hate them a lot.
Like, I’ve been trying to make them work for six months and have finally just given up and ordered a new pair.
Now, part of this is my fault. I should’ve returned them. I didn’t feel like they fit right from the first time I put them on my face, but my other glasses were totally useless and I was like – how am I going to get through like three weeks trying to make this work with no glasses between shipping them back and waiting for new ones to arrive (a definite downfall to the cheap, online glasses world).
I thought, I can tolerate this.
The problem is that they are too big. I don’t love how they look, but whatever, I could deal with that, it’s how they fit that’s the dealbreaker.
They like slide off my face. So I looked into how to do adjustments to the frames myself, and after trying to heat up and bend the plastic, as advised, it made no difference.
I decided the final straw was when I realized that with all the time spent at home this year, if I didn’t hate those glasses so much, I would’ve worn them instead of my contacts way more and saved the cost of a new pair of glasses in contact lenses already.
So while I had one excellent experience with Coastal, this one was a let down (though again, a little on me, I should’ve returned them).
Hopefully the replacement pair I ordered will be a better fit.
