Profile
I am thirty three years old and the Performance Director at Big Apple Circus. I make $70,000 a year and live in a show provided RV. I also have health insurance through this job that’s deducted straight from my paycheck, so I don’t really count it in my bills since it’s never money I see anyway (it’s roughly $150/month).
Saving & Spending
I think I failed wildly at personal finance this month, but I had a lot of fun doing it. So there’s that.
Our show has been in National Harbor, Maryland for the whole month. There are a bazillion places to eat here… I’ve gone to most of them. Two of my best friends from high school live nearby so after our matinees every Sunday, one of them would come here for dinner and we’d pick a new restaurant and on my day off on Mondays, I would drive over the river to Virginia to meet up with the other one for lunch.
Very cathartic for my soul, a little less so for my wallet. But worth it.
I had to go to the doctors and get a few tests done. I’m fine, but it was just another experience in being so pissed off about the state of our insurance system that I pay for insurance and still have to spend several hundred dollars just to get some silly little thing fixed. I’m also struck each time when I think back on how many times in my life that would’ve completely derailed my finances, so I just wouldn’t have gone to the doctor – even though I should have. I’m really not convinced America is a first world country.
It has been pretty chilly here, so most of my RV expenses were a little higher due to going through a lot of propane. Especially when I had this exciting visitor say with me for the week:
- Food – $740.33
- Transportation – $102.84

Your visitor is adorable! I’m glad you have friends in the area and have been able to socialize with them. Sometimes the budget has to take a small hit to spend time with those you cherish, as long as you’re still on track with your goals.
I have to agree that the healthcare system in this country is not first world worthy. I recently saw results of a study showing how often different age groups didn’t go to the doctor or take medication when they needed to because they couldn’t afford it. It was sickening (pardon the pun).
