Watching movies is one way of relaxing after a stressful week for students at school. It is also a fun way of bonding with family or friends. However, for students who have a limited allowance, it can be tough to squeeze out enough money to buy movie tickets and snacks.

Here are 5 easy tips to save money on movie ticket:

1. Eat at home before the movie or bring snacks with you to the movie theater.

Eat a full meal at home so you will not have to buy food at the theater’s concession stand. But if you are a person who cannot do without snacking while watching movies, drop by at the grocery store and buy some chips and juice to take to the movie theater. The price is a lot cheaper and you have a wide selection of food to choose from. However, make sure to know if the theater allows taking outside food in the theater before buying snacks in the grocery store.

2. Look for movie tickets deals and discounts.

Browse the web for discounts and promotions offered online. Coupons and promotion codes when you buy movie tickets online are offered by various coupon sites like coupon4share.com. You can also inquire directly with the theater for cheaper movie tickets deals. Some theaters offer cheaper movie tickets in a specific day of the week, so be on the lookout for it. Don’t hesitate in inquiring about these promotions with theaters because it is not usually advertised.

3. Ask friends to watch movies with you and split the cost of the concessions.

If your friends are also planning to watch the same movie, why not invite them to go with you on a specific day and time. By doing so, you can save money by splitting the cost of snacks among you. You will not only enjoy the movie, you will enjoy discussing the story with your friends too!

4. Avoid 3-D films.

The 3-D films cost more than the 2-D version and can hurt your eyes if you are not wearing 3-D glasses. Some cinemas will charge a separate fee for the 3-D glasses. Look for the 2-D screenings instead of the 3-D.

5. Sign up to websites giving free previews.

Look for websites who gather information for free public preview screenings aside from free screenings to industry freeloaders and the media. It is one way for manufacturers of the movies to promote their movies to potential customers. People who watch the movies will tell their friends and families about how great it is, intriguing them enough to watch the movie. This is a win-win situation for the public and the manufacturers. Some of these websites are See It First and FMUK.

So what are you waiting for? Start hunting for free movie coupons and great movie tickets deals today.

A note from Mel: I couldn’t resist this shameless plug for an old college friend’s web series on YouTube. It’s called The Art of Theatrical Ushery and I find it HILARIOUS. If you’ve ever wondered about what life working in a movie theater might be like, you might find it pretty amusing too. Here’s the first episode:

  1. The free preview sites seem interesting. I’ve always wondered how people go to those.

My eyes don’t even see the 3-D so it’s a waste for me. I’ve read almost half of people don’t really get the full effect anyway because of how everyone’s eyes are different.

    • Yeah, 3-D doesn’t really do anything for me either. And I think the glasses are kind of obnoxious.

IMAX in places like museums though are pretty cool. I would pay $15 for that… but even when they advertise movies as IMAX in regular theaters, they aren’t really.

  2. I’ve only watched one movie in 3d and that was more than enough to tell me it’s not worth the extra price. Normally I stick with 2d but that time there was no option. Since I was there with a friend I decided to just roll with it. I actually skipped seeing the second Hobbit movie in the theatre due to missing the 2d showing.

Now here’s something, my friend is near blind in one eye. I’ve told him numerous occasions he should go request a discount. While he does require the glasses to see the movie he gets none of the 3d experience.

    • I love #1 movie theaters!! We had one where I went to school and it totally spoiled me. I have no problem waiting to see most movies an extra month or two.

And even though it’s wrong, I totally sneak in snacks too. When I was a kid, my best friend’s mom had a “movie theater purse.” It was gigantic and would hold a can of coke for a all of us, a popped bag of popcorn and some candy. It was awesome.

    • That’s true. I have the AMC Stubs reward. I hesitated for a while getting it, since it’s $10 a year, but since ticket prices are ridiculous now, it’s not too difficult to get to $100 – which get’s you a $10 reward. And I’m the only one of all my friends who has it, so when we go out, they can each swipe it when they get their ticket too.

  3. Another tip: For those who live in Canada, there’s the Scene card. Whenever you go to the movies, you can accumulate points on your Scene card towards free movies in the future. You can also accumulate points by getting a Scene debit card from Scotiabank. I have this card and with the number of debit transactions I do, I can get a free movie every few weeks.

  4. Thanks for linking up over at Money Propeller!
Movies can get very expensive, very quickly! I had never heard of the free preview sites before this. I absolutely love popcorn, so I try to make sure I eat enough before going that I can just get a small popcorn to satiate my popcorn cravings.

    • Personally, I’m a sucker for Cherry Coke. I don’t usually keep soda in my house, but the movies seem like a great place to spring for it – except you really are springing for it when it’s like $4 for a small :o/

  5. I didn’t know that there were ticket discounts for movies. I guess I should’ve assumed! Yes, I always bring my own snacks! LOL! I used to go to all the screeners in California. I never considered doing it here. I’ll have too look into it! Thanks for sharing with Creative Style Link up!
