Choosing what college to attend is one of the most important decisions you will ever make in your life. The better the college you attend, the more prestigious your degree will be. This means that employers will be more interested in hiring you when you finally graduate and hit the job market. This is why you should take a great deal of time deciding where you will receive your post secondary education in Canada. There is no reason to rush this decision.

It is not an overstatement to say that where you go to college will play a large role in determining how much money you make for the rest of your life. So what are some of the things you should look for what you are looking at colleges? Here is how to go about finding the best college for your academic needs.

1. What do you want to major in?

Many people enroll in college having no idea what their major will be. However, this is not a smart thing to do. This is because some schools are much better in certain areas than others. For example, one school might have a great business school, but their medical school is not highly regarded. This is why you need to decide what you are going to major in before you start college.

After you have made this very important decision, you can start to research which schools have highly regarded degree programs in your area of interest. There are websites you can go to which list all of the top ranked schools in a wide variety of degree programs.

2. What is the school ranking?

Colleges are all ranked based on the level of education they provide, as well as how prestigious their degrees are. The better the school you graduate from, the more money you can command throughout your life. This is why you must strive to get into a highly ranked university. However, as mentioned earlier, some colleges have specific programs which are highly ranked. So a college’s overall ranking might not be very high, but the ranking of a specific degree program at that school might be high. This is why college rankings can in many cases be misleading. Going to a lower ranked university might not be a bad thing, assuming the degree program you are enrolled in is highly regarded by potential employers.

3. What will it cost?

Everyone knows college is not cheap. This is why cost must always be a major consideration when you are determining where you will go to school. Many colleges have generous scholarships that they offer to students. You should see if you qualify for any of these.

There are also various grants you can apply for, depending on where you live. Even if you receive a scholarship and some grants, you will most likely need to pay for some of your college education yourself. This means that you will need to decide how you will pay for it.

You can get a job and work while you are in school. You can also choose to borrow the money. However, if you choose to borrow the money, you must also consider the interest that you will need to pay on the loan. Some people do not want to enter the job market with this much debt.

  1. Great points. I would argue that it is important to think through these things not only in selecting a college, but really before even applying. No use applying to and getting your heart set on a school that doesn’t have your major or costs way too much to attend.

  2. I don’t know about Canada, but in the US there are a few schools (basically the Ivy League) that are super-selective and carry weight with employers. However, once you get out of that level, (and most people won’t qualify for that level) I don’t think employers pay much attention to where you went to school, especially if you are a few years past graduation. I think the main thing to remember is that college, particularly if you have to take out loans to afford it, is a financial investment, and to treat it like one. http://rannthisthat.blogspot.com/2013/03/how-to-pay-for-college-without-massive.html

  3. You have some good things to keep in mind when looking for a college. For most college students, myself included, the cost is a big factor. However, it’s always good to look at what you want to major in, and then find a place that has a good program for that major.
