The power of setting goals and making a list is pretty awesome.
In my own life, I’ve seen the power of setting goals really help me out financially. My net worth has grown around $46,000 over the 3+ years I’ve been blogging. I made myself run a 5k. I’ve managed to prioritize time with family and friends. I built up a solid emergency fund.
Knowing where you want to go is half the battle. Motivating myself to do extra side work is real easy when I know exactly where that money is meant to go and knowing it’ll inch me closer to any goal.
New Year’s resolutions also help remind me that there’s more to life than money. While a lot of my goals are financial, the last few years I’ve made an effort to include a few things that don’t necessarily have to do with money.
Some years I manage all the goals, some years I don’t. When I don’t, I have a chance to re-evaluate whether that goals was something I really wanted to do or something that seemed like a good idea at the time, but really, I’m not all that committed to it. It reminds me that when you narrow down your focus to what you really, really want, you can usually make it happen.
- Max out my IRA.
- Buy $1,000 in stock.
- Contribute $2,000 to my New Car Fund
- Contribute $5,000 to my Down Payment Fund
- Contribute $1,400 to my cousin’s wedding fund.
- Develop 2 new resume skills.
- Do something really fun with my brother.
- Write a journal or magazine article.
- Hike something.
- Master making macaroons. This. Is. The. Year.
I love that one of your goals is to do something fun with your brother. I tend to take both of mine for granted. And macaroons, you brave pastry person!

Great goals for 2017! That video is a great reminder of what’s important. Sometimes people get so bogged down with all the sand and pebbles in their lives that they forget about the rocks.

These are some great new year goals. I’m resolved to track my spending each month so that I can identify any leaks and check if I’m over doing my budget. I have also cancelled my gym membership this year, started morning jog and working out in park. I think changes in ourselves will help save money throughout the year.
Good for you! I think you’re nailing the cheapest way to stay fit, especially if you live in a temperate area year round.
Love that video. You have some ambitious goals but I know you are motivated to get them done. #7 is the best of all. I would volunteer to be a taste tester for #10, but then my goal about improving my diet would probably get lost in the shuffle!

LOL. I might – although macaroons must have less calories than most cookies, right? They’re so light and fluffy.
and if you master macaroons you could sell them as a side-hustle!

Oh yeah!
I think your goal to master macaroons is my favorite! Seems like a really good mix of financial and other goals. This year I’m choosing to do more goal setting by month with some overall (read not SMART) goals for the year. Good luck with you goals!

Love your goals and how they are all about spreading your wealth! I also agree that even if we don’t achieve some of our goals we can look back and reflect on why!
Good luck with your goals 🙂
Mine is to make more savings and pay off credit card debt we have re-incurred 🙁

Good luck with your goals too!
Those are some lofty goals, are you planning on doing 1 a month or just do them as they happen?
The goal is to get them done by the end of 2017. We’ll see how it goes.
When I set my goals for this year I didn’t really factor in any fun activities. Your post is a reminder that I should also do that. 🙂 Good luck with your goals this year! 🙂
Those all seem doable except for mastering the macaroons :-). Just kidding – those look like some great goals. Good luck in 2017!
