Thanks largely to the growth of online facilities, getting a job in the media is arguably more accessible than ever. Having said that, the modern marketplace does provide two major problems. Firstly, there are a lot of terrible roles out there and, secondly, the good ones attract hundreds of application. So that begs the question: what’s the point of even trying? 

Frankly, if you’ve been defeated before even starting out, it’s probably better to look elsewhere. Because, sadly, the statistics show that it is one of the hardest industries to break into. If, however, you are up for the battle to secure a rewarding career in this very attractive field, it can still be possible.

Several contributing factors will influence whether a job feels worthwhile. Ultimately, though, the financial barometer should be top of the agenda. After all, there’s little point in having an OK job if a poor salary stops you achieving other life goals. Thousands of people graduate with degrees in media fields.    

However, getting an IMC online qualification can take you ahead of the crowd as communication is still at the heart of all business elements. Those media-related people skills make you a far more attractive employee, and it can unlock far better-paid roles in the process. It does require an investment into your future, but the fact you can learn while earning elsewhere is a major bonus.

The harsh reality is that getting into a well-paid media role is tough. Once there, though, a plethora of opportunities become available. Given the media’s increasingly important role in society, it’s an outcome that offers great longevity too. Then again, money isn’t the only motivator.

Working in the media can offer the opportunity to change lives. It might not have a direct impact like being a nurse or a firefighter. Still, working on ad campaigns for charities or products that can enhance green living are examples of how you can leave a positive mark. Similarly, journalistic coverage on various topics in many formats can alter people’s audience. In that way, a career in the media still offers immense power and authority.

On the other hand, employers often have set ideas about how they want things to be done. The sums of money involved can often suffocate the freedom and creativity that was present in previous generations. Of course, there are plenty of exceptions, but this is one issue that a lot of people find to be a huge source of frustration. Not least because media workers are often blessed with creative minds in the first place.

Perhaps the best way to bypass this issue is to start a company of your own. With online networking, you can quickly link up with other creatives to complete the jobs you’re incapable of doing. There’s no doubt that you have the ideas. As long as you can find a way to monetize and grow the vision, this could still be one of the most rewarding careers imaginable.

Changes to the arena, in terms of both quality and competition, have erected a few hurdles. Still, if you have the ability and desire to overcome them, working in the media can still make your career dreams come true. In truth, the fact that you’ll have worked harder to achieve those goals is sure to provide an extra sense of satisfaction too.
