With the Tony’s coming up, you might want to check out some of the shows on the Great White Way, but the prices might be giving you some pause.

My best friend and I waited about three years to see The Book of Mormon and still would up paying nearly $200 a seat for back of the balcony tickets. I was not a happy camper.

In high school, my friends and I would scrounge money from our afterschool jobs to make it to the coveted $90-ish mark that would get us a ticket to a show in NYC.

Fortunately, these days, there are a few tricks to finding discounts, but my favorite is Today Tix.

The number one reason I love this app is that it’s a one stop place to enter several lotteries at once, including the lottery for Shakespeare in the Park (which I have still never won. W.T.F. Public Theatre).

Beyond that though, they’ve got a lot of great discounts on the majority of shows on and off Broadway. Their selection has really grown over time. It includes big new musicals like Groundhog Day, War Paint and Bandstand to off Broadway hits like Blue Man Group, Sleep No More and Puffs. They even have some events like circus, improv shows, and magicians.

If you’re not from NYC or planning to visit, they also have shows listed in Philadelphia, Connecticut, DC, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and London.

When you download the app, if you enter the code FRCNO, you’ll get $10 off your first purchase, which is pretty awesome since they’ve already got some of the lowest theatre ticket prices around.

If you’d rather stick to free theater, check out this post I wrote about free theater in New York City – summer is really the season for it!

If you live in the City and going to the theater is eating a hole in your budget, you can also volunteer to usher at many theaters in exchange for seeing the show for free (this is true outside of NYC too).

What’s the best show you’ve ever seen?
