Accountability: June 2014

Profile

I am twenty-nine years old and this is my last accountability update of my twenties. Yikes! I work as an assistant production manager and my yearly salary is $52,000.

Saving & Spending

June was a pretty steady month money wise. Due to a death in the family, I was actually home for about a week and a half straight and since we were so busy with preparations and people feeding us, I didn’t really spend anything.

I was able to dump a full paycheck into my IRA, which was nice and I’m set up to be able to do that with the first paycheck in July too. So I’ll consider that a score.

My plan to list 10 things a week on eBay totally got sidetracked so… we’ll try that again with July. I did wind up making about $75 from eBay this month.

Side hustling also fell to the back burner, understandably, I think, so I only brought in a whopping $40 in freelance writing. Speaking of, be sure to check out TravelBlueBook for interesting travel reads.

My FinCon side hustling hasn’t really gone up much – only to $844.36, but I still think I have a chance at hitting my $1500 goal by the end of September AND I know I’m not going to spend anything near that much, since I’ve got $400 of credit from Barclay’s card and I’m almost at the bonus for the United Airlines card I just signed up for. So… looks like lots of spending money for Bourbon Street drinking and jazz clubs for this gal!

I also got a $16.96 dividend check from my Prudential stock, so clearly I’m ballin’ this month. ;o) If nothing else, it’s a reminder to get my act more together and figure out how to invest in more dividend stocks. When I thought I’d still be living on a train this time last year, I had the beginnings of a great investment plan hatching. Sadly, rent has eaten all of that plan… but I try not to think about it too much or I start composing emails begging the cruise line I used to work for to come back. Fortunately I haven’t hit send on one yet.

My goals are the same as always. I’m still planning to contribute to my IRA, so I think I’ll be able to get that maxed out and I want to get my emergency savings up to at least $5,000 by the end of the year. I’d also like to invest in another stock.

I’m definitely going to be cutting all of it close, so we’ll see. I have faith in the IRA success and probably the stock success. The emergency savings is going to take some serious side hustling, I think.

Life

And I know you’re all super invested in this, but I did come to a birthday decision. An acquaintance actually stole my drunken roller skating idea off of Facebook, but invited me along. It was a good time but drunken people and roller skates don’t really mix that well.

I opted instead to cross something off my NYC bucket list and check out the show Accomplice: Greenwich Village with some friends. So now I’m a little more excited about turning 30.

I’ve also spent the month completely obsessed with Northern Exposure and was more than a little heartbroken to finish the series the other night.

And has anyone else been watching Penny Dreadful? I can’t come to a decision on this show. I’ve loved Josh Hartnett for years, but the show is pretty darn bizarre. Although the guy playing Dorian Gray has totally eclipsed Josh Hartnett as my current male obsession. I guess I should actually learn his name :oP

Turns out it's Reeve Carney... you are much cuter than your name is, sir.

    • Oh, I totally am planning to. I just thought it would be a fun side hustling experiment to see if I can get there that way. There’s only one small thing that could pop up and make me potentially decide not to go and I should know about that by the end of July.

  1. I remember turning thirty, felt no different than twenty nine. Now that thirty three is fast approaching this fall how do I feel? Wiser and more awesome. 😉

    • LOL. I know, right? It’s on Showtime and it’s a weird amalgamation of strange tales (it’s where the name comes from) – like Frankenstein and vampires. Mr. Gray is based on the story The Portrait of Dorian Gray.

    • Oh yeah from Pearl Harbor – that was one of my favorites. And no. He fell off the face of the earth. But when he popped up on the Penny Dreadful advertisements, my high school crush on him rekindled immediately.

I think the last thing I saw him in was 30 Days of Night in 2007.

  2. Northern Exposure! That’s a blast from the past….I groaned last week when the latest season of Downton Abbey showed up on Amazon. That’s sucked all of my television time away (well, that and the World Cup). I’ve been trying to get into Fringe (I’ve watched three episodes). I’m not hooked, but I don’t mind it. I think that’s the death knell of a show: “I don’t mind it.”

    • Aw, I definitely went through a Fringe phase! I was super into it for several seasons, but then it got weird… and if you saw a few episodes, you can imagine how strange it had to get to say that.

Downton Abbey is also amazing! I flipping love Maggie Smith.
